According to the Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the manufacturing cost of flat glass saw a significant drop of 9.3% in November. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor indicates that in November, the PPI for the glass and glass products manufacturing industry fell by 0.9%, with the cost of flat glass products decreasing by 3.4%, marking the end of a five-month consecutive price increase. However, compared to November 2023, the PPI for the glass and glass products manufacturing industry still rose by 1.6% year-over-year.
Glass and Glass Materials Prices Flat Glass – In November, flat glass prices dropped by 3.4%, the first decline in five months. The prices had been rising from July to October, with increases of 0.4%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.1%, respectively. The last price drop occurred in June at 0.5%. Compared to November 2023, the price of flat glass decreased by 1.6% year-over-year.
U.S. Initiates Anti-Dumping and Countervailing Duty Investigations on Float Glass Products from China
On October 21, 2024, U.S. applicants Vitro Flat Glass, LLC and Vitro Meadville Flat Glass, LLC filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), requesting the initiation of anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations on float glass products from China and Malaysia.
The case numbers are A-570-188 and C-570-189. The anti-dumping investigation for Chinese products will cover the period from April 1, 2024, to September 30, 2024, while the countervailing duty investigation will cover the full year of 2023. The ITC began investigating the potential harm to the U.S. industry on October 21, while the DOC has extended its decision deadline to the end of December.
